Puppies

Brittany has Puppies!

Late Saturday night and into Sunday morning Brittany delivered a litter of gorgeous solid red puppies, eight in all. All of the puppies appear to be very healthy, and hungry, and there is no apparent runt. Markings range from blazes to snips, with all puppies having white chests and toes. They are hard to tell apart though, as you might notice by my record of who has the whiter toes.

Without further ado, here's the pictures!

Everybody taking a well deserved nap. Can you believe all of those puppies fit in Brittany??

The puppies sure are cute, huh? We always think they are, and love to give them personal attention, which is one reason why we name them when they're born. We actually make lists of boy and girl names and choose the puppies name when we record their size and markings. Don't worry though, you can change their names anytime, just let us know so we can put their new name up.

With our girls we're always there for the puppies birth, actually we're there 24/7 for several days before her due date, just in case. That way we can assist if needed, provide moral support, and of course clean up :)

The new puppies are kept in our bedrooms at first, then once their eyes open and they become more inquisitive they're moved out into the living room. This just helps them get used to the normal sights and sounds of a home, and also makes it easier for us to keep an eye on them as they're getting quite  playful, and messy, by then.

We start feeding them softened food and cottage cheese at around 3 weeks, though at that age they mostly just gum it since their teeth are barely budding. It isn't until 4-5 weeks that they really eat, though it can get quite messy at feeding time since puppies, like human babies, believe in putting their feet (or hands) in their food and mushing it around :P

Heath care in the first eight weeks is basically limited to dewclaw remove at 3 days, de-worming at 2, 4, and 6 weeks old, and of course vaccinations at 6-7 weeks old. Grooming at this early age is basically limited to a sanitary trim (shaving the nose, bottom of their feet, etc) and a quick bath in hypo-allergenic shampoo. Normally we just shave the top of the nose but let me know if you'd like the face shaved like a poodles. We start trimming their nails at 2 weeks, since tiny though they are they can be pretty sharp.

Once the puppies are walking and playing we start letting them out of their pen for playtimes and visits with the other dogs (the puppies always have plenty of aunts and uncles around here!). Once they figure out how to they love to run around, and each day they'll explore a little further. Areas such as laundry rooms, the dark spaces behind couches, and doors leading to the outside are especially interesting to these little explorers. You can watch them getting smarter every day :)

We try to pet, hold, snuggle, and kiss the puppies whenever we can, as well as play tug-a-war with any toy available to substitute for our toes. Apparently, over several litters they've proven to be chew toy of choice. Our goal is to have the friendliest puppies possible by the time they're ready to go.

As you can probably tell by the Photos page we love to take pictures of our puppies, and that doesn't stop after you put a deposit down. We try to take weekly photo shoots and post the pictures here as well as on each puppies personal page. Here's the great thing though-- we print the best pictures and put them in a photo album for you to take home. After all, who wouldn't want to remember those little squished puppy faces?

Once you put a deposit down we recommend mailing or bringing a blanket and a toy for your puppy. The blanket should smell like you (not new from the store, though the toy can be) so the puppy will already know your smell before he or she goes home. They also come with two toys and a blanket of their own. Having blankets and toys that smell like their mom and siblings seems to help the puppies make the adjustment to a new home a little easier :) You can also bring a crate for the puppy to start getting used to when they're almost ready to go.

The puppies come with their CKC registration application.
